Lieutenant Kersey was born in Jiangsu, China and immigrated to the United States in 2009.  He was accepted to the NROTC program in 2013 at the University of Kansas where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. In May of 2017, he received a Commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy.

Lieutenant Kersey completed Nuclear Power School followed by Nuclear Prototype Training in Charleston, SC. He then reported to Submarine Officer Basic Course after the nuclear training pipeline at Groton Connecticut. Upon completion of the initial training pipeline, Lieutenant Kersey was assigned to Virginia Class fast attack submarine USS JOHN WARNER (SSN-785) as a Division Officer. During his sea tour, Lieutenant Kersey served as Electrical Assistant, Damage Control Assistant, Assistant Weapons Officer, and Junior Watch Officer. 

In December of 2021, Lieutenant Kersey reported to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and currently serves as the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Midshipmen Advisor. Lieutenant Kersey is currently pursuing a MBA degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is set to complete by Spring of 2024.
